About

KIPP Sol Academy is a tuition-free public charter middle school that opened August 2013 in East Los Angeles. KIPP Sol Academy will serve 130 fifth grade students in 2013-14, and will add one grade each year until we reach capacity in 2016 with students in fifth through eighth grade.

The mission of KIPP Sol Academy is to provide an excellent education that ignites hearts as much as minds. By teaching academic skills, fostering intellectual habits and cultivating character strengths, we light the spark within each child necessary to explore, advance and succeed on the path to and through college. Our students will transform their lives and the lives of many others as advocates who confidently think, speak and act for themselves, their communities and for positive change throughout the world.

Having the opportunity to attend incredible private school's within Santa Monica in combination with having unbelievable and supportive parents inspired me to pursue education. Recognizing that this is an uncommon circumstance for a young man of color is concerned me and pulled at my heartstrings. After college I joined Teach for America and taught in Miami-Dade School District for three years prior to moving to Los angeles to continue teaching at KIPP Sol Academy. I teach middle school English and Social Studies and am loving every second of it.

Steven Almazan

I work full-time as a Special Education Teacher for KIPP LA Schools in East Los Angeles. I seek to improve student achievement through differentiated instruction and relationship building. As a native Angeleno and a product of the Los Angeles education system, I understand the incredible challenges that students from low-income neighborhoods face in order to succeed inside and outside of the classroom. My ultimate goal is to provide students in Los Angeles with a better chance of graduating from high school and going to and through college.
