Each year, we ask our students to read 1,000,000 words. But why 1,000,000? Because research shows that students who read 1,000,000 words are 90% more likely to read on grade level, perform better on assessments across all content areas, and love reading. Currently, only 35% of students at my school are reading at grade level. However, the number of students that are within a year of that would increase our percentage to closer to 50%. We want to celebrate kids who earn 1,000,000 words by treating them like MILLIONAIRES. That is, we want them to walk into school on a read carpet, we want them to be showered in swag, to send them to lunch in a limo, and really, we just want to make it rain fun!
