I have been blessed and beyond fortunate to have used my education in order to have worldly experiences such as researching at the esteemed National Institutes of Health, studying and interning abroad in Cape Town, South Africa as part of a global education team and living in Austin, Texas a bustling hub of education, self-betterment and opportunity. All of these experiences, and more, are why I am a teacher. I want to foster environments for students to connect on something deeper than the subject material. I want them to remember the laughs, remember the smiles, I want them to feel safe to express themselves and feel safe to be who they are. As an immigrant, I remember my first time in an American classroom. I had a desk with my name on it and I could leave my belongings at school - I had never had that. As I reflected back on my educational journey leading up to my college graduation, I realized the power that comes with education. The odds were really not in my favor due to being a first generation, growing up in Caroline County where the population was 2% other, an immigrant, a student that tested out of ESL and within the same year tested into the gifted program, and a woman in STEM. However, the faith that my teachers, peers, community, and professors had in me really made a difference. Although my educational journey has been far from easy, I often think what would’ve been if I would have never came to America. Educational inequality is REAL and this is my way of giving back to education for all the opportunities I’ve gained by having a degree. I’m excited to share my story with black, brown, and white students and give them the education that they deserve.

Having grown up in the suburbs of New York city, I was privileged in receiving support from my mentor teachers, parents, and community. I always felt loved and cared for and thus had the moral/emotional support to believe in myself and go to college. Nevertheless, I've come to realize that not every child in our country has those opportunities because of their personal circumstances and the zip code they were born into. For that reason I decided to join Teach For America after graduating from Binghamton University in New York State to make an impact and give back to my community. In doing so, I recently moved to Texas and accepted a position as a 5th grade Bilingual teacher. I hope my personal experiences as well as training and education will allow me to expand more opportunities for my children, just like others did for me growing up.

I am excited to be a part of the TFA family and join the movement to solve education inequity in this country and provide all students with a quality education. I'm fortunate enough to be selected from a nationwide talent applicant pool to join a teacher corps comprised of leaders who commit a minimum of two years to teach in high need public schools. This summer I will be participating in an intensive skill and knowledge development program aiming to increase student achievement as well as a comprehensive professional development program including seminars, discussion groups, workshops, and content and professional learning communities specific to teaching license areas. I can't wait for my first year with Teach for America.
