Nicola Jefferson

Teacher and Coach

I come to teaching via a broad range of experiences. I have practiced law; worked as a human rights researcher investigating and writing about human rights violations in Rwanda just prior to the genocide there; served the immigration community in Washington, DC as an immigration/refugee lobbyist; and, before joining the teaching faculty here at The Promise Academy at Martin Luther King, Jr. High School, founded and directed (for twelve years) a non-profit organization dedicated to helping youth in Chester, PA do well in high school, graduate from high school, and gain admission to an institution of higher education. Regarding the latter, every student that participated in this four-year college preparatory program did, indeed, graduate from high school and pursue post-secondary education. Throughout the years I have always been drawn to and continue to be involved in the education of youth, including tutoring dozens of young people one-on-one on a variety of topics and teaching English as A Second Language at a local community college. I came to MLK in November 2013 and feel honored and privileged to work at this school under its current leadership. I am a Spanish teacher here and am certified to teach French and Social Studies, as well.
