Tyson Johnson

Department Head/Teacher

As a 3rd year teacher In Miami, I've witnessed the consistent hardships that children in neighborhoods of poverty must face. They are expected to overcome more obstacles with less resources. Help my students become active learners with a strong sense of civic responsibility through supporting my social studies classroom!

Heather Feshbach

Social Studies Teacher

I am so in love with each and every one of my students! Yet, as a high school serving low-income communities, my classroom does not have access to many necessary resources that my kids deserve. To start this year off right, I want to make sure my students have access to basic learning materials. I teach Honors Government and Economics to the seniors at Miami Central. It is such an incredible group of kids who get so excited to learn about the political and economic structures of our nation and in the world. My kids have an insatiable thirst for knowledge and to succeed in life, therefore it is so exciting to teach them about such relevant topics that will help get them to where they want to be in life. Teaching seniors is unique because I get to facilitate a crucial transition in my students' lives, the transition to real life. Many of my students want to go to college and get closer to the success that they deserve. It is truly so exciting seeing them thrive in their last year of high school and getting closer to closing the achievement gap. My kids make me proud each and every day and never cease to teach me something new

Phillip Jerez

Teacher

I am an 11th grade U.S. History and Advanced Placement Psychology teacher. I currently have 175 students split between classes. In a school of 2,000 (of which 95% of students qualify for free-and-reduced lunch), there is certainly a strong need for resources that will give our students the same opportunities to learn and grow that students across the district have.

Gellyn Attis

I have been a 9th/10th grade Biology teacher. I have been teaching a low-income school in Miami, FL for the past 12 years. I have stayed in this profession because I have seen the beautiful potential in my students, and wish to continue to inspire and motivate them to be the best they can be.

Hello! I'm Ms. Silva. I was a Teach for America corps member in 2010, and completely fell in love with teaching and my students. I have been in the classroom for 6 years now in Miami-Dade county, in the same school. I teach Foreign Language (AP Spanish and French), sponsor the Foreign Language Club, coach the girls' Bowling team, and tutor students for the ACT.

Carleb Marcelin

Mohamed Kamara

World History Teacher

I didn't choose to become a teacher, teaching chose me. I started out as a substitute teacher in Camden, NJ as a side gig and little did I know how much my life would change. I realized how important it is for students to have a role model who understands them and I'm here to make a difference! I currently teach World History. I would like to take the opportunity this year to not just teach what's in the textbooks, but also give my students important historical information they need to better understand the world and make a difference. My students are mostly African American and Hispanic. They face many of the challenges teens face growing up in an inner city environment. We are also battling the achievement gap that minorities in America are dealing with nationwide. My students need more than a "traditional" education. Everything in this project is geared towards giving students knowledge of self and knowledge of wealth. The goal is to give students the proper understanding of the world they live in and how they can survive in it. The education they will receive will stretch far beyond a classroom.

Anais Young

Teacher

Working as a teacher has been the most memorable years of my life. I love to hear stories from prior students about the impact art has made in their lives. I have been teaching at Miami Central Senior High since 2009 as an Art Teacher and I have treasured every minute.
