About

McGlone is a turnaround/priority intensive school in the Denver Summit Schools Network. We are a public innovation school, with extended day and extended year. We have shown significant growth in the past four years, catapulting ourselves from one of the lowest-performing schools to one of the top in the state for growth. We have made tremendous growth in student and staff culture as well. We are now at 715 for enrollment, up from low 500’s before turnaround, and have gone from 50% turnover in teachers to 80-90% retention for the past two years. Our student demographics are representative of the Montbello neighborhood: 70% ELLs, 97% Free and Reduced Lunch, and 100% college bound. We have been named by the district as a top 10 priority school for 15-16, \"identified based on at-risk component of School Performance Framework, including poverty, mobility, ELLs, special education… 10 elementary, 10 secondary selected via the At-Risk SPF formula which considers poverty, ELL, SPED and mobility (with minimum school size thresholds)”. However, our student demographics do not dictate their potential. As a school, we place a lot of emphasis on teacher support and growth – all our teachers are coached one to one weekly, and we provide professional development around instructional practice and use of data. We use teacher leaders and distributive leadership to help support this coaching model. We are a technology-focused school, and all our classrooms have Promethean boards, and our 3rd -5th graders have 1:1 chrome books. This enables students and teachers to be innovative in their instruction and prepare students for 21st century skills. We have extremely high expectations for staff and students – and we use our innovation status to think creatively around how to provide supports to reach these expectations. Because we are innovation, our teachers are at-will, and there is no tenure. Since turnaround, we have also focused on creating a strong student culture, through PBIS systems, a strong student support team, and teacher professional development. The McGlone leadership and staff truly believe in the power and ability of public school turnaround, particularly with a focus on data, arts, community, and teacher sustainability. The McGlone leadership and staff have a deep commitment to this community. The students and families, and McGlone teachers and staff, are what makes this turnaround possible, and what makes the work meaningful.
