Little People, Big Changes

The Description

Through my work in Urban Education the past decade I’ve operated with the intention that one day all children will receive an excellent education.  Each year I’ve taught, I’ve made significant growth, including being the 6th highest growth classroom in Denver Public Schools. Yearly, my students make significant growth academically, as well as socially, as I believe in teaching the whole child.

I’ve created a program called “Little People, BIG changes” which empowers youth to make changes both locally and abroad. It places children in the drivers’ seat of decision-making, research, program development and implementation.  Through the genius ideas of elementary students, we have sent shoes to children in Mexico, (2nd grader), helped increase literacy rates in our school through partnering with a local ECE program (4th grader), and helped worked on access to education globally through sending children to school in Ghana (5th grader).

These are just a few examples of the challenges my students have solved.  Students in high-poverty areas are used to programs & charity being ‘done’ to them, yet they are typically not in charge of these decisions.  We flip that script and put them in charge of project creation & the best part, allow for them to be the philanthropists.  Participants in “Little People, BIG Changes” see themselves as leaders in the community who continue to impact change as they transition into middle school.

In this program students need computers in order to research the areas of impact in which they choose to focus.  Students need access to crafting materials as a way to assist them in creating the 'small business' in which they create to fundraiser for their cause.  Students need supplies in which to create marketing materials, (poster-board markers, etc).

Students embark on the journey of being thoughtful, community-minded, socially conscious citizens who work to make this world a better place.  As Jonathon, 5th Grade at McGlone Elementary, stated, “It’s a matter of equity. All children should have access to an education. It’s just not equal and we should make a change for that!”

We are looking to purchase 3 chromebooks: $189.99 (plus taxes and shipping) = $600. In addition to that, we are hoping to also receive 4 $25 gift cards to Michael's for shopping for supplies for each groups project = $100.

Total= $700 + $100 = $800.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase...I will purchase whatever pieces of the project I am able to.
