About

Laura C. Saunders Elementary School began as Homestead Elementary School. In 1952, it was renamed A.L. Lewis Elementary School to honor the gentleman who established it as a neighborhood school. Enrollment averaged between 400 and 500 students. In 1996, with the completion of a new building, the name was once again changed to its current name, Laura C. Saunders Elementary, in honor of a teacher and principal during the A.L. Lewis years. Current enrollment is between 700 and 800 students. Our Mission Statement: Our mission is to develop independent, life-long academically successful, healthy learners by working in partnership with families and community. We have established an atmosphere conducive to enabling our children to develop not only academically, but also emotionally and socially, thereby creating in the children a sense of themselves and the world around them.

2nd Grade Teacher

I teach at Laura Saunders Elementary in Homestead. My students have very limited access to books and technology, and most are not able to bring basic school supplies to class. My goal is that all of the children in my two classes will love reading and grow 1.5 years in reading levels during their year with me.

Teacher

This year I will be serving as a 1st grade teacher at Laura C. Saunders Elementary school. LCS is located in Florida City, the southern most point of the Florida turnpike. My students and their families reside in one of the poorest communities in Miami-Dade, Florida City is considered a job desert. Poverty has been shown to be the number 1 indicator of student achievement. In order to combat poverty students need access to resources and tools in the classroom that otherwise would be unavailable.
