As many of you may know, over a year ago, a week after my college graduation, I left California and began a journey to rightfully serve the community of Southwest Philadelphia. The community I teach in is far from affluent, as a matter of fact, 100% of the kids I teach fall below the poverty line. However, what they lack socioeconomically they make up in intelligence, inquiry and potential to be the future leaders of their community and country. After my first year, my school asked me to be the teacher of the schools FIRST STE classroom, science, technology and engineering. I will not only be looping up with my boys, but 3 other 5/6 grade classes. My vision is to use STE for my kids to problem solve in their community. To use the facts of science and imagination to develop technology and engineering to address the inequities in their communities. My goal is not to force my kids into all being scientist, doctors and engineers, but for them to know that as black kids in America, that IS a viable career and academic option. They will leave knowing they have the skills and potential to be that and anything else they choose in their lives. Realizing this vision requires academic supplies and technology that as a teacher, has to come out of my own pocket.
