About
At KIPP Spirit our instruction is learner centered and drives towards college readiness. Our classrooms promote this by fostering an environment where all students feel safe to think critically about the subject matter, and push the thinking of others by working in collaborative groups. Moreover, we recognize that every student learns at different rates.
Culture at KIPP Spirit focuses on developing the key skills needed to be successful in a college preparatory high school, college, and in life. Character lessons begin with our 5th graders through KIPPnotizing during our summer session, and extend into the school year through daily morning meetings and weekly grade level community meetings. During a student's matriculation through Spirit the lessons that are learned connect to the current issues that present themselves on the specific grade level. All lessons are rooted in researched best practices for middle school children and align with the Spirit values and the Elite Eight Character Strengths.
Marisol Flores Nabor
Spanish Teacher
I am a first generation college graduate. I studied Mathematics and teach middle school. level Spanish to some kids who are coming in contact with the language for the first time. My students comprise mostly of African American students from disadvantaged neighborhoods. This is an incredible experience for them to open up a Global language that is spoken in 22 countries. The impact on their lives is potentially extraordinary! When they realize how many doors can open up for them by learning another language. I'm excited! I want them to benefit from this class exponentially. I've planned field trips, we have all kinds of classroom activities (for example: learning how to order a meal in Spanish...). So, they are a great bunch of kids and we learn from each other everyday.

Cliff Campbell
Chess Instructor
I have been a Houston educator for 15 years, and have always looked for ways to transform textbook education into real-world critical thinking skills. As a result, K.I.N.G. Chess League was officially founded in 2009 as an outlet to provide affordable chess lessons to students across the Houston area. Chess is often perceived as an elite cognitive sport, and our program proves that most children (even with challenges) can master the most influential game in the world! I love the way chess can transform critical thinking skills. Our students have learned how to apply these decision making, mathematical, and other skills in their own personal lives. I have found my students to be empowered by attaining these skills through chess, and their successes are my greatest joy!
Cliff Campbell
Chess Coach
Coach Cliff (K.I.N.G. Chess League)has been teaching chess in the greater Houston Area for 14 years. We primarily serve at risk students. We have had our program in KIPP Spirit for seven years. Our goal is to teach cognitive and critical thinking skills to youth through chess and how they can apply it to everyday life situations. We also expose youth to tournaments, travel opportunities and scholarship opportunities.
