The Description

With these funds I will I will purchase the Digi-Block Math Program classroom kit.  It is a math program that provides hands on materials for students to manipulate in order to better understand place value and how numbers get their names.  It is a visual and tactile way of representing why we move numbers from one place value to another.  My students are all visual and tactile learners.  I teach 9 of the 25 students in my school that are diagnosed with autism in our self-contained program.  I have had numerous students that had no problem computing math problems but could not tell you why they did what they did.  The Digi-Block program is a bridge between the computation and the understanding of why we manipulate numbers the way we do.  Offering this tool to my students will be providing them a piece of the Math puzzle that has been missing for them.  It will allow them to better understand Math and the way numbers are used in the world around them.

My school is located in a high poverty community.  We have limited resources and funds to supply this program to our students.  I rely heavily on researching programs that have had a proven impact on education and raising funds in order to incorporate them in my classroom.  I believe this program will allow my current and future students the opportunity to become independent learners and increase there educational success.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase smaller parts of the Digi-Block program in order to offer my students access to the program while I continue to raise funds to complete the classroom kit to offer hands on practice with the program to the entire class.

Unfortunately, we were unable to raise the full amount to cover the cost for the full Digi-Block program, BUT, I was able to purchase same of the main pieces of the program to give my class an introduction to the program and some of the materials.  I am so excited to offer them such a great manipulative to utilize for Math instruction.  I will continue to raise funds in order to purchase the rest of the classroom package.  Thank you to all investors that allowed me this opportunity to support the needs of my students.

About the Creator

I am a special education teacher in North Carolina. I teach 9 boys diagnosed with Autism. I have a 10 year old son diagnosed with ADD, speech delay and he is selectively mute. I teach in a Title 1 school and have severely limited resources and funds to obtain resources that are greatly needed in my class. Last year I was trained for 8 months to become a service dog handler from Paws 4 People. I was able to bring my service dog, Magnolia, to school with me daily. Magnolia helps my students in many areas. Socially, communication, educationally, sensory, are just a few areas that she has been able to positively impact our school community. I also started a Special Education Parent Teacher Organization in my school. My vision for this group is to provide education, and resources to families and teachers of children with special needs. To be able to give teachers in the general education classroom resources and training in order to provide better service to their children and offering them a better chance of a successful educational experience. I am always looking for research based methods to teach children with special needs. I am always looking for better ways to incorporate parents and families into the education of our students. The funds received will be used for these reasons. To provide proper instructional material for our students, to provide training for parents and teachers, to provide more educational/social activities that include all students.
