With these funds I will provide 60, 5th grade scholars with a Sylvan math workbook and flash card set for remediation. My school data shows that many of the scholars entering 5th grade still need to master procedural (fluency) math. I have used Sylvan's workbook for students who I tutor and the results have been amazing. I am confident that providing each one of my students with additional resources will yield assessment data that everyone can be proud of.

This year, my 3rd grade scholars "Proved the Parcc Possible" with 79% of them  demonstrating proficiency on the Parcc exam. This was no easy feat, but it was done with great teaching and additional resources separate from the curriculum. Sylvan workbooks and flash cards will be one of the additional resources I will use so that my 5th grade scholars have the same success.

Here are some benefits of the workbook and flash cards:

1. Cuts down on the time it takes to make copies. Those 45-60 minutes a week can be spent working one on one with a struggling scholar.

2. Provides remediated instruction in class. Every scholar learns differently, some scholars may need to focus on math fluency vs how to tackle a conceptual word problem.

3. Family investment. Often, many parents are bewildered with curriculum homework. The Sylvan workbook is less abstract and families can help their scholar complete work. The book also provides explicit steps on how to tackle problems.

4. Curriculums are not one size fit all. Some scholars learn in different ways. It is my belief that scholars must be able to complete procedural math before they move on to application and conceptual.

5. Flash cards provide a quick an easy ways to remember basic concepts. Scholars can review these whenever they want. These are especially necessary for scholars who struggle to take notes.

6. Every family can't afford Sylvan or Kumon tutoring services. With the Sylvan workbook and flash cards, I will be able to give scholars that extra support provided by a traditional tutoring service.

7. Lastly- My school doesn't use traditional textbooks and many parents would like a textbook/workbook so that they can work with their child at home and support teachers.
