Promoting Social Awareness and Lifelong Learning

The Description
With these funds I will build a classroom library that includes a diverse selection of literature from across the world. The library will include an assortment of novels, in addition to e-readers and/or tablets where students can access worldwide news articles and non-fiction texts as well. My ultimate goal is to create socially aware citizens, who also choose to be lifelong learners. With access to texts and interest in these topics, this can happen!
At my school, our 6th grade curriculum focuses on the theme of immigration and power. My goal is to build a clearer, fuller picture for my students about how these themes look throughout history and across continents. By providing my students with a wide range of texts, in both content and level, all my students will be able to access this topic and form their own opinions. Currently, funds at my school do not provide me the opportunity to purchase texts outside of curriculum. The funds raised by this fundraiser will allow my students to break out of this mold and become fully informed and independent learners.
Building empowered students who are not afraid to speak their minds and share their informed ideas is something I have always been passionate about - by providing my students access to a wider range of texts and information helps make this possible. View the attached YouTube video to see how this has shaped my classroom for the last 3 years!
Back Up Plan
If we do not reach our goal I will purchase as many new texts as I can to begin building my classroom library.
