Kids for KIBO

The Description

With these funds I will...

Teach computer science and coding to my 1st graders through KIBO. KIBO is an interactive, simple, coding robot in which no computer or tablet is needed. It’s totally self contained and is designed for children ages 4-7. You’re probably thinking “a six year old programming a robot, no way!” It's true. I was involved in a week long training and it is very simple. Students design their code using the wooden blocks (included in the kit) with bar codes. Bar codes are then scanned into the KIBO Robot, KIBO is placed on a flat surface and the triangle button is pushed. The KIBO comes to life or makes a “confused” sound. When the confused sound is heard children know something is wrong with their code. A block of code is then changed or removed and the child tries again.

The look on a child's face when they make their robot come to life is priceless!

The most exciting part of using this programming in first grade, is it can be incorporated into any subject. For example, during small group reading time, students can “act out” part of the story using KIBO. KIBO can be decorated to look like anything their imagination can think of. Incorporating literacy and coding is seamless and students are eager to learn.

Thank you for considering helping my students become 21st century learners and having the needed tools to succeed.

Back Up Plan

If we do not reach our goal I will purchase...nothing.  I teach on a Native American reservation and there is no budget for supplies such as coding robots.  I will continue to fundraise until I accomplish my goal.  My students deserve all the opportunities to become successful in the 21st century.

About the Creator

First grade rocks! I am a mom of 4 boys and a first grade teacher. The students and families that I work with are kind, hard working, and loving. Even though I found my passion later than many, it is the best career anyone could ask for. I believe a growth mindset is one of the most powerful tools in the classroom. I teach that mistakes make your brain stronger and you may not be able to do it now, but you will with perseverance. That's the power of yet! "The Power of Yet" is how I fund projects for my classroom. I may not have the books, supplies, etc. yet, but I will with hard work and perseverance.
