This time last year my students were eagerly awaiting the start of a new school year that was temporarily thwarted by Hurricane Harvey. When the start of school finally arrived, students poured into my classroom eager to learn and immerse themselves in books despite the tragedies they had just survived and witnessed. As a result of all the time missed, we hit the ground running already several steps behind and missed out on the critical beginning moments that allow students to fall in love with reading all over again. I would like this year to be different. Instead of reading purely for fun, awe, and the journey an author takes you on, we had to focus more intently on reading to learn. With these funds, I hope to purchase books for my students that will allow them to once again read for the simple joy of reading. These books will be ones that inspire creativity, encourage curiosity, and grow diversity in views and understanding.
