Educating the Whole Child

The Description

Art gives students an opportunity to explore the world within themselves and around them. The school I am working at has not had an art class for students in a few years. Imagine an elementary school with no art! No paintings to take home and hang on the fridge, no lopsided pottery to house your plants, no hand crafted artwork to adorn your home and heart. Teachers at our school have done the best they can to provide students with these opportunities, but one can only do so much in an already time cramped day with limited resources.

I am thrilled that the leadership at my school has given me the opportunity to revamp our art program for our students (kindergarten through fifth grade) next year! Each child will be able to spend time in a room dedicated to learning about art and about what they are capable of. Many students see school as a place full of failures and expectations they cannot reach. My hope is that our new art room will allow our children to realize the potential they hold to succeed.

Starting up a new art classroom will take a whole lot of new organization and gathering of supplies. Our students deserve more than the standard. They deserve the best.

Help me give them that? Help me add more color to their world?

Back Up Plan

If we do not reach our goal, students will still make art! These children can make beauty out of nothing- they are masters at it! But they deserve so much more.

About the Creator

I have completed my first year of teaching in the Delta-something that, at times, seemed like an impossible task. But now, this place is becoming a home and this job is becoming a dream. Serving this community and these students has been the greatest honor of my life. I have learned so much in one year. But the work is not done. I am here to stay and fight for the equitable education that these children and their families deserve. For now, that means embarking on the mission of revamping our Elementary Art Education program.
