Support Mr. Ell's Math Class in Inner-City Miami!

The Description

After completing my first year (of two) teaching algebra and geometry in at a Title I school in Miami, I now am in charge of strictly geometry to ~150 10th graders at Miami Central Senior High School. Although a nationally ranked high school football team, the community this school serves is extremely poor, with 90%+ of the students being offered free or reduced lunch.

One of the biggest hurdles that students in high need schools face is a lack of the necessary materials that are needed daily. It makes it infinitely more difficult for students to take part in activities and classwork when they do not have basic supplies. The funding for classroom supplies is very minimal and the teacher typically must use their own funds to buy classroom supplies throughout the year.

To get the year started off right, I will use the funds that I raise to purchase the startup supplies needed to welcome my students to a classroom that is clean and stocked full of materials. This will allow me to provide the required supplies to students that otherwise would not have them. This will range from extra pencils and erasers to mini whiteboards for enhanced learning.

Every dollar I receive will be put towards classroom supplies so anything you can contribute really will make a difference for my first year serving these students. Last year many generous donors helped fund classroom supplies, and I was able to help grow a group of Grew a low-proficiency algebra retake students from 0 to 70% to meet graduation requirement with overall 90% of students improving their previous score. This would not have been possible without generous family and friends.

Thank you!

Another note: although Teach for America has seen some criticism saying that its members displace other teachers in the schools which we are placed, I can assure you that is not the case at my school. Our school lacked an Algebra II teacher for the entire second half of the year after the teacher who started the year quit.

Back Up Plan

If we do not reach our goal I will purchase...I will use the funds to purchase as many supplies as I can for my students.

About the Creator

I am excited to be a part of the TFA family and join the movement to solve education inequity in this country and provide all students with a quality education. I'm fortunate enough to be selected from a nationwide talent applicant pool to join a teacher corps comprised of leaders who commit a minimum of two years to teach in high need public schools. This summer I will be participating in an intensive skill and knowledge development program aiming to increase student achievement as well as a comprehensive professional development program including seminars, discussion groups, workshops, and content and professional learning communities specific to teaching license areas. I can't wait for my first year with Teach for America.
