The Description
With these funds I will build a math manipulative lending library that parents can access and utilize at home. Students in my classroom are incredibly hard working, curious, passionate, and thrive on learning through hands-on activities and project based learning. I have a wonderful parent community that values academics. Like every parent, they want to be able to help support their children in their learning but often don’t know how to support or challenge them in order to extend their learning beyond the classroom. Much of my students’ success is based on how strong my partnership is with their parents.
Common Core has changed the way we teach; we focus on deepening their understanding of concepts and skills in order to prepare them for college. Many of my parents struggle to help their children draw a model to express an equation or how to utilize personalized learning systems at home in order to help support their child’s learning beyond the classroom. My students would greatly benefit from this cause because parents in my classroom would have the opportunity to use hands-on manipulatives to give additional support outside the classroom when they are struggling with a particular concept.
The faction and equivalent kits will give parents a visual aid in teaching their students about how fractions connect together. The Tangrams, Geoboards, and centimeter cubes will give parents a hands-on approach to teaching volume and perimeter. The Math Shark and Minute Math flashcards will help assist parents in reinforcing basic math facts essential to 5th grade math. Finally, the place value cards will give parents a tool to check for understanding in this essential 5th grade standard.
