How It Works
Each article on Newsela is published at 5 reading levels so every article is accessible to every student in a class, regardless of reading ability. An entire catalogue of content called “Max6” is leveled specifically for grades 2-6, ensuring that content is accessible for younger readers. Many articles are available in both English and Spanish.
Newsela partners with over 40 preeminent content partners such as The Smithsonian, National Geographic, The Washington Post, and Scientific American to offer news articles, biographies, primary sources, famous speeches, and other nonfiction texts. Content ranges in topic from sports, history, and science to current events, health, and the arts. With over 4,000 articles on the platform, and over 10 additional articles published daily, every student can find articles of interest on Newsela, and every educator can find content relevant to what they teach.
To promote close reading and engagement articles are embedded with assessment activities like quizzes, annotations, Write prompts, and vocabulary activities called “Power Words.” Articles can be assigned to a class, or students can read independently based on what interests them. Teachers can stay on top of student activity, completion, and progress in their Binder.
Newsela Professional Learning supports educators with blended learning pathways and resources to support effective implementation of Newsela PRO.
Product Description
Newsela is an Instructional Content Platform that brings together engaging, accessible content with integrated assessments and insights to supercharge reading engagement and learning in every subject. It starts with dynamic content from premier sources like the Washington Post, Smithsonian, and Biography.com—covering topics students care about, that connect to core curriculum, and aligned to standards. Every article comes in 5 reading levels, tailored to the skill level of each reader.
Assessments are integrated directly into articles to help students engage with the content and to give teachers and principals actionable insights on students’ activity. The result is more engaged readers—and engaged readers are better learners.
Newsela PRO can be purchased for school and district-level implementations. Pricing ranges based on school size, with option to add enhanced features for an additional fee. Volume-based pricing is available upon further consultation for multiple school purchases or full district-wide implementations. Educators can work one-on-one with a Newsela representative through the company website to determine exact pricing.
