With these funds I will...purchase a classroom set of the graphic novel "The Silence of Our Friends" written by  Mark Long and Jim Demonakos; illustrated by Nate Powell.

It is important for our students to learn about their history and most important, historical events that actually took place in their city, their neighborhood of Third Ward. This book tells the civil rights story of a black family moving from the poorest neighborhood in Houston to an affluent neighborhood on the other side of the city. This will give my students a more closer approach to the civil rights movement because it is does take place in their hometown, although not a popular story for this social justice movement. They will be able to know Houston during the 60's and compare any differences from the novel to current time. 

Amazon.com has the book listed for $11.06, and I am asking for a class set of these books for our students to become more knowledgeable about their city, their neighborhood, and this social justice movement and the connections to the social movements taking place now.
