Urban Middle School Interactive Science Lab

The Description

With these funds I will...provide 8th grade Science classes with Chromebooks to do virtual labs. Currently my Science class has no functional computers or Science equipment for experiments, leaving our students at a disadvantage and lacking the skills to be successful in the 21st century. New Bedford is an urban district in Southeastern Massachusetts and the computers would provide a resource students will utilize and take part in virtual experiences and labs without any further equipment purchases this year and for years to come without the need to replenish lab equipment and consumables. My students are bright and inquisitive and would utilize the computers to research, assess and compare new knowledge enabling them to compete with same age peers throughout the country. They deserve to have the same access to the countless learning opportunities that other middle school students are using on a day to day basis. The district is in need of current technology and funding for Chromebooks would provide keep students up to date with the cutting edge science happenings and allow them to realize the numerous opportunities available to them upon graduation. These children do not realize their current potential and are lacking the self confidence and know-how to compete with students nationwide. The Next Generation Science Standards require higher order thinking skills and the ability to apply such skills to real world issues; our students are currently behind same age peers. Please help the future by supplying the funds necessary to close this gap and take care of our future generations.

The most inexpensive Chromebooks that I have found are the Lenovo N21 at a cost of $179.00 per machine including a $20 discount. The cost that would supply computers for over 100 students per day would amount to $5,370.00 after a $20.00 discount on each machine. The only necessary items would be power cords or if possible a computer cart.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase...as many Chromebooks as I am able to and have students share. I am looking for donations from anywhere and if I could find a site with refurbished machines at a lower cost I would pursue that as well. I am hoping to provide new machines for my students so that the warranty will allow us at least one full year of accessible material.

About the Creator

Hello I am an 8th grade teacher in an urban school system in Southeastern Massachusetts. I currently teach science in a room with no functional computers and no lab equipment. My students are at an unfair advantage to peers in more affluent districts and having access to technology would allow us to utilize the numerous activities and virtual labs available. A cart of 30 Chromebooks would enable students to do hands on activities daily as well as allow for differentiated lessons addressing varied learning needs and styles. Chromebooks would replace the need for consumables and each student would have access to every aspect of 21st Century skills.
