The Description

My Algebra 1 students here in Miami have had an amazing start to the year. They come to class each day energized and ready to learn. However, they often come to class without paper or pencils. At my school, nearly 90% of the student body is eligible for free or reduced lunch. This makes fundraising for necessary school materials as well as supplies for our math department extremely challenging. Despite this, my students are extremely resilient, persistent, and curious.

To begin, without access to a working printer, ink, or paper, creating lessons and classwork for my students is nearly impossible. We can never have enough whiteboard markers as my students are constantly coming up to the board to display their knowledge! Lastly, having the necessary sanitary supplies, such as Clorox wipes and Kleenex, to keep the classroom clean will ensure that my students remain healthy and present at school.

My vision is to spark the confidence and overall appreciation for mathematics in my students who have historically faced failures in math. Any materials I receive will help ignite this spark. I am requesting your help in empowering my students to become persistent problem solvers who will take ownership of their own educational trajectories.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase as many supplies such as copy paper, pencils, white board markers, Kleenex, calculators, etc. that I can.

About the Creator

My name is Ms. Mullin and I am originally from Boulder, CO. I currently teach algebra and coach girls soccer at Miami Northwestern Senior High School located in Liberty City, FL. Miami is home to the 3rd largest income inequity gap in our country. With nearly 90% of the student body at Northwestern eligible for free or reduced lunch, fundraising to maintain and grow strong academic and extracurricular programs continues to be a challenge. Despite the numerous barriers that stand on my students' paths to success, they remain incredibly resilient, hardworking, curious and creative.
