The Description
With these funds I will incorporate interactive opportunities for my 6th grade students who are studying ancient civilizations. I hope to facilitate a mock archeological dig in the classroom at some point in the year, and also hope to use these funds so that my 6th grade students might create an Ancient Civilizations museum for parents and community members to attend. Last year, in my previous post in California, my high school students created a Museum of Forgotten Wars, which was entirely student directed (photos attached above) and hugely successful. They have described this as one of the most powerful learning experiences they have had. Now that I am in Philadelphia, in a 6th grade classroom, I would like to adapt this museum project for my current students. The cost of the Museum of Forgotten Wars was about $200 for 20 students, and so I estimate a minimum of $400 for 54 students to curate an Ancient Civilizations Museum for Wissahickon Charter School. As the museum is student-directed, exact supplies are not known at this time, though I can predict we will require at least the following supplies: poster board, paint, glue, and diorama kits.
Back Up Plan
If I do not meet my goal I will scale down the vision of the Ancient Civilizations Museum. This can be modified by taking out more expensive, interactive pieces, and having the students create something more akin to a History Fair at the school.
