Making Math Matter

The Description

My students' main struggle is living in a city ridden by poverty. They also attend schools that cannot invest in updated materials they desperately need to learn. Their coming in 2-3 years behind level in math. I need up to date resources to ensure my students are on level by the end of the year.

My kids are bright and ready to learn. They yearn for hands on materials and math books they don't have to leave in the classroom. They are looking to feel like they matter. They want to learn math but struggle because we cannot let them take home materials. They are funny, make me laugh and help me smile on the darkest days. They speak their mind, with no filter. They know what they want, and they want to learn! They live in the heart of a city brought down by flooding and consistent poverty. Sometimes they come to school without food and clean clothes. All they want is to educate themselves and become college ready so they can compete in this world and become something. They have hopes and dreams, and you are the way and the help they need to get resources they desperately need to learn. These are kids who ask for extra homework or projects even when it might take up their weekend they have off from school. They are smart, they are willing, and they are determined!

With your donation my students will finally get their own math book they can take home and work in. Currently they cannot take home their math books. This is exactly the material they need in order to take math home with them. By giving these students their own common core math journals they will have a daily activity lined up with our common core aligned work and lesson plans. This will allow for students to have daily work they can keep in a journal and look back to all year for help when they get stuck. My students need 100 individual Common Core Math Journals, task cards, hands on measurement centers, and math practice cards to improve math skills in the Common Core.

These donations will improve my classroom by empowering my students with the supplies they need as well as the knowledge they need in order to be successful in all grades to come. If my students lack the resources during this important growth period they will not have the knowledge of math sufficient enough to move forward and will be in danger of being held back in an already challenging world and school setting.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase as many math books as I can and math manipulative for the classroom so that, at the very least, each group table will have an entire set of materials that can be used in class.

About the Creator

My name is Brandi Freeman and I am a 5th grade Math teacher in the projects of New Orleans. I joined Teach For America to work on their vision that "One day, ALL children will have an opportunity to attain an excellent education." I am a first generation college student who has not only received an Associates Degree and a Bachelors Degree, but became the first of my family to receive my Masters. I am dedicated in educating our future students and dedicated to giving all students a chance at a opportunistic future. I realized in my first year teaching that God chooses special individuals to do this work and I know he designed me perfectly for this job. I come from a broken home where education wasn't seen as an important goal. Many of my students come from families that feel the same way. I am dedicated to helping these students find their potential, whatever it may be, and helping them tap into the education that will get them where they want to go.
