The Description

With these funds I will...

purchase items for the students to use during iPad Lab.  I will purchase 5 Dash robots, 2 littleBits sets, and 13 sets of Tiggly letters.  Currently, the iPad Lab has 5 Dash robots.  The students use them to practice introductory computer coding, measurement, geometry, spatial reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving.  However, with up to 32 children in a class, students have to split into two groups. One group works with Dash and other students work with a different robot.  Even then, the students working with Dash are in groups of 3-4 resulting in less time interacting with the robot.  Additionally, splitting the class into two groups means students do not have enough time to complete a project before it is time for the second group to have a turn.  The robots come with a variety of apps that allow them to be appropriately used with most students. robots will be used in grades 1-5. Practicing coding can be a challenge, but watching the code come to life adds a huge element of fun.

I will also purchase 2 sets of littleBits.  littleBits are small, pieces that can be connected magnetically.  Once connected, students can create a variety of circuits.  Each circuit can accomplish tasks.  These sets help students understand electricity, but more importantly, allow their creativity to blossom.  Students can create a doorbell, musical instrument, or create interactive jack-o-lanterns.  While the iPad Lab has a few sets, there are not enough to accommodate an entire class.  Therefore, they can only be used with small groups of students.  I would love to be able to introduce littleBits to an entire grade level.  They are perfect for children in grades 3-5.

Finally, I will purchase 13 sets of Tiggly letters.  These letters, in combination with Tiggly's apps, allow students to practice letter sounds in an intriguing, entertaining way. Students LOVE these apps and in turn LOVE learning.  The letter manipulatives allow students to incorporate additional fine-motor muscles.  Brain research tells us that the more muscles students use when learning new skills, the better their retention.  As a result, the addition of the physical manipulatives is a great tool!  These letters will be used for students in grades K-2.

The addition of these items to the iPad Lab will greatly impact a large number of students for a long period of time.  My students are hard-working individuals and deserve the best learning environment I can provide.

I will purchase:

5 Dash robots for $170 each

2 littleBit Gizmos and Gadgets Kits for $199 each

13 Tiggly Letter sets for $29.99 each

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase...fewer items from the list above.

About the Creator

I work in an elementary school in an iPad Lab (like a computer lab but with iPads). I teach every student in my school in grades K-5. In other words, I serve over 700 students per week. In this role, I teach my students classroom skills, but extend their knowledge using technology. Additionally, I pride myself in introducing all my students to computer programming (even my kindergartners) and teaching them about digital citizenship.
Teaching and training teachers in the use of technology and iPads both in my school and in the surrounding states through workshops extends my ability to influence professionals and their students.
