The Description
With these funds I will...
I would like to continue changing the dynamic between principal and student at my school. Throughout the month, I enjoy giving the young men at my school books as rewards for demonstrating good character and/or for exhibiting the school values of leadership, brotherhood and scholarship. What started with a small group of boys has now tremendously grown in interest. Mr. Green's Book club is now a sought after reward. The recipients of any of the book I give have 1 month to read the book and write a brief summary. Students then have a lunch with me (food of their choosing from a local restaurant) where they we do a book chat and celebrate their original act, which earned them the book, and the fact that on top of their school work, they read an additional book and wrote a summary. The boys then have the choice to give the book to a teammate for them to read and the process can repeat with the original reader joining in on the lunch and adding to the discussion. I plan to purchase no fewer than 30 different books with the funds raised.
As a principal of an all boys school, is has been somewhat difficult to build a culture of wanting to read, but I am happy to say that culture is changing every day. Your donation will help the young men at KIPP Polaris Academy for Boys continue to see reading as a reward rather than a punishment.
Back Up Plan
If I do not meet my goal I will purchase...If I do no receive all the $200 requested, I will buy books with whatever funds are raised. I go to Half Price Books where many title can be purchased for less than $5.
