The Description
With these funds I will...build beehives and study flight using drones. Primarily, with the money we raise we will purchase materials to construct several beehive designs including Langstroth, Warre, Top-bar, and Mason Jar Beehives. Secondarily, we will purchase motors and parts so that we can design and create drones using our 3D printer to fabricate parts.
This is a particularly student driven project insomuch as they have a tremendous degree of control over which design they choose to utilize for either a beehive and/or drone. I believe that students learn best when they are invested in hands on projects that are environmentally relevant. Now, more than ever, we need to train our students to become aware of a myriad of issues that are critically detrimental to our environment. We need for them to think critically and work together to foster solutions and become stewards of the natural world in which they dwell.
Find below a list of materials needed for this project:
Cedar wood and fence posts for constructing both deep and shallow boxes ($150)
Plywood for bases and tops ($50)
Small frames ($75)
Wax cell dividers for small frames ($60)
Large frames ($150)
Wax cell dividers for large frames ($100)
Queen excluder screens ($60)
Quart sized mason jars with caps ($35)
Aluminum screen ($20)
Queen bees ($100)
Mini drones, motors, and parts ($200)
Back Up Plan
If I do not meet my goal I will purchase...as much material as we need to complete one beehive. The more money we collect the more hives we can make and the more ambitious our designs may become. We will also be asking parents to donate supplies that we may use.
