Sophomore End of Year Trip

The Description

These funds will go towards providing the travel expenses necessary to take around 100 sophomores outside of Houston on an end of year trip through New Orleans and Atlanta. This experience will involve many opportunities for building class camaraderie and gaining exposure to future college options as they get ready to enter their junior year.

The funds will cover expenses including charter busses, hotel accommodations, meals, and activities. The amount of money we raise will influence how many learning experiences and class-building activities we can afford! Ideally, we would like to tour the French Quarters in New Orleans, Louisiana. From there, we will travel by bus to our hotel in Atlanta, Georgia. While there, we would like to visit the MLK Museum & Center, the Atlanta Aquarium, the CNN Studio, the World of Coke, and the Center for Civil and Human Rights Center. Further, we hope to provide the full college experience for our students by eating in the cafeteria of the colleges we visit (Spelman/Morehouse, University of Georgia, Emory, Georgia State University, etc.)

Back Up Plan

If we don't reach our entire goal we will still go on the trip and just limit our activities.

This experience will be remembered by all of our students and teachers. I am amazed at the impact it has on them at such a critical time.

Good luck with the trip. TFA is a wonderful program, and what you do is so important for the students you serve. Have fun and be safe.

Best of luck with this worthwhile endeavor. The kids at KIPP Houston High are lucky to have you as a teacher.

About the Creator

Born and raised outside of Detroit, Michigan, I have always had a passion for education. After graduating from of the University of Michigan, where she earned a degree in Secondary Education with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Political Science, I moved to Houston to teach Geometry at Lee High School in HISD. In 2011, I joined the KIPP team to become part of the movement to close the achievement gap in Houston. I really enjoy working with the great educators, students, and parents who make up the KIPP Houston High School family!
