Learning on the Move

The Description

A classroom full of mobile sit/stand desks and pedal desk would benefit our students at Maize South Middle School in numerous ways. We have 900 very active 6th -8th  graders in our building. We as a school staff try to do many things for our students to maintain and encourage more activity. Having our students more active and engaged in learning is a priority. These desks would give our students an opportunity to actively learn and try and stay more focused while in a classroom setting.

Actively participating in the learning process while having the chance to move around more freely and not confined to a standard student desk is another benefit. With students are more tuned into learning in more quick active ways, the mobile/stand desks and pedal desks would suit that style more. So much of what our students are interested in have to do with them being engaged and entertained while learning. Cell phones, snapchat, tweeting, Instagram are all areas are students are engrossed in. The mobility part to these new desks would help those students because they are staying active and not sitting confined to a standard desk.

Grouping students and being allowed to actively move with the learning is also beneficial. A big part of student learning moving toward the future has them learning to be more collaborative in their thinking and future working environment. These desks would be a good tool to promote that type of necessary future learning.

At our middle school level, our students are conditioned to want to be busy and on the go. Our school staff is learning more strategies on how to reach and engage their students in learning. For example, many of our teachers have our students do some type of brain gym, fun exercise to get students excited about learning in their classrooms. With the addition of these desks, we would be able to have another additional educational tool to enhance that learning.

Our special education school population at our school has many students who need to be active and engaged continually by learning on the go. Having these new mobile desks would provide another way to approach and promote their learning. Sometimes these students are more easily distracted if they are restricted to a standard desk or table. With opportunities to walk and move around with these mobile desks the student’s behaviors and general attitudes toward learning would become more positive.

In the end, these new mobile desks and pedal desks would give teachers an opportunity for more open and collaborative spaces in the classrooms that would hopefully foster more meaningful learning experiences. It might also give teachers more opportunity to be more creative with how they design their classrooms.
