The Description

With these funds I will be able to purchase new instruments for my students in orchestra. Many of the instruments we have available at our school are in need of some serious T.L.C. (replacing). Many of my students have to play on instruments that are either too big or too small for them. This can hold back their development of technique as well as lower their confidence in performance. My goal is that each of my students has the equipment they need to sound their best. A correctly sized, well-maintained instrument is one of the key components for any orchestra student to be successful.

The students at my school cannot often afford the luxury of being able to purchase/rent their own instruments, so they rely on what the school can provide. At this point, we do not have enough instruments for each student to be assigned their own, therefore they must share instruments (sometimes up to three students sharing the same one). This means that they are not able to take their instrument home every night to practice even if they want to. If each student could be issued their own instrument, and was able to practice each night at home, the quality of everyone's experience in orchestra at our school would be much greater.

Violins typically cost around $400, a celli is $1,200 and a string bass is $2,000. We are most in need of mostly violins/violas as well as a smaller sized bass. These funds will go directly toward purchasing as many instruments as possible.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal, I will purchase as many instruments as possible with the funds I am able to raise. If I do not make enough to buy new instruments, I will use the funds to purchase other necessary equipment such as strings, shoulder rests, rosin, bows, cases, rock stops, etc.

About the Creator

My name is Lee Rivera. I teach the orchestra program at KIPP Sharpstown College Prep. The mission of our school is a very powerful one... to ensure that our students internalize the habits of self-reliance, honor, achievement, responsibility to others, and persistence in order to become life-long learners capable of excelling in college and committed to transforming tomorrow.

I teach string orchestra to fifth through eighth grade students. My main goal for my students is that they learn to become life-long music lovers, and are able to pass that love of music onto future generations. We value the fine arts very highly at our school. So much so, that each and every student is enrolled in one of our five fine arts classes (orchestra, choir, visual art, dance and theatre) for all four years they are here.

We work very hard to provide the students with a high quality arts education along side their rigorous study in the other content areas. With this in mind, I fully believe we help to make our students into well rounded and community conscience individuals who will become strong productive members of our society in the future.
