The Description

With these funds I will...begin to create a "Makers Station" in my classroom. A makers station is a place where students can actively engage their creativity and problem solve in a hands-on and interactive way. I believe that students need to have access to creative and kinesthetic activities when learning. I believe that learning should be engaging and fun.

I work at a school that is located in a high poverty neighborhood where 80% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. We are a Title I school that has a population of English Language Learners at almost 20%. These resources will be going to my Kindergarteners, who I wish to have the most amazing first year of school they could possibly have. Our school has rigorous demands on our Kindergarteners, with high expectations in both reading and writing. I would love for the students to have the opportunity to voice their creativity through hands-on construction as well as problem solve in an interactive way.

With these funds I will begin to create our Makers Station by purchasing Lego materials. Legos are such an important tool when it comes to creative play. Not only does it require fine motor skills that younger students need to develop, but also it provides a balance of structure and rules, since bricks can connect in only certain ways, and creativity, as the lists of possible creations is infinite. Legos can also inspire children to achieve higher level careers, such as engineering and architecture.

The supplies that I would like to purchase are:

Lego Large Creative Brick Box - Quantity 1 - Unit Price $59.99 Total Price $59.99

Green Baseplate - Quantity: 5   Unit Price: $7.99       Total Price $39.95

Shipping is FREE

Tax: $4.00

The total price is $103.94

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I would still like to purchase Legos, but I would instead purchase a smaller set. As much as I would love to have large set of Legos so that my students are not limited in their creativity, something is better than nothing. I would also forgo the baseplates, and focus just on getting the connecting pieces.

I was finally able to spend the funds that I received! I was able to purchase a big Classic Lego box set that contains hundreds of piece which leaves LOTS of room for creativity! I also was able to purchase to smaller starter sets that include Lego people and the pieces to build Lego vehicles. I set up a space for the Maker's Station after school on Friday, and I am hoping to "open it up" tomorrow!
