The Description
“Virtually all of the advantage that wealthy students have over poor students is the result of differences in the way privileged kids learn when they are not in school….America doesn’t have a school problem. It has a summer vacation problem …” Malcolm Gladwell, Outliers.
When I asked my students what plans they had for the summer 95% of my students answered that they had no plans. They were echoing the summer vacation problem and proving that socioeconomic disparities is one of the main problems attributing to the achievement gap.
Children with more privileged backgrounds can afford to attend summer camps, special classes, tutoring, and a myriad of after school activities. The slight boost they get after school and over the summer accumulates over the years and can make up to a 4-5 year gap in time-spent learning.
Here we have an opportunity to do something about closing the achievement gap.
That is why I am asking you to embark on this mission so that some of my students can attend a summer learning program. I want to ensure my students have the exposure and experiences they need to be successful in the 21st Century. For this reason I want to send as many of my most diligent students as it is possible to the Wynwood Maker Camp where they will learn about Wearables, 2D & 3D Design, Virtual Reality, Electronics, Programming, Sustainability, Computation Thinking, and Computational Fashion.
My students need your support and this is why:
My students attend a 100% minority school where 99% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Consequently they experience institutionalized racism on a daily basis and lack great awareness of the world around them and what they are up against. 50% of my students have come from all over Latin America, from many different and often difficult situations. With great frustration I get to experience the lack information and programs available for them. All of my students hold the American Dream, but need the tools to make them successful.
Back Up Plan
I will send as many students as possible to the Maker Camp, if there is any money left over or not enough to send an additional student I will purchase Chrome tablets for our STEM club so that we can start our coding component of the club and we can participate in a bridge building competition next year.

Summer Update #2
August 19, 2016
Hi Everyone,
I apologize for the late summer update but here it goes!
So! We have managed to put nine kids through the program and all students kids got Chromebooks to work with while in class and also to continue learning, tinkering, and creating at home. Amongst the most popular projects was Robotics where they got to design, wire, and program robots and 3D printing printing where students created everything from dollhouses, to clocks, to Pokemon figures, and even a Piggy bank. The students loved it so much and the camp owners are so generous that we are now planning on creating an extension of the program to have some of the students who really enjoyed their time and expressed interest to participate in an after school program. We even have one student who is very interested in returning to learn how to code so that she can help others and eventually intern there during the summer while she is in High School.
I am also happy to announce that the last set of students present their final projects tomorrow. As part of the closeout to this cause, I will send links to some of their websites and get pictures of all of the things they were able to create. Again, THANK YOU THANK YOU! You have affected the lives of 9 amazing students by allowing them to have enriching experiences that they otherwise would have never had. Thank you!

Summer Update #1: First Round Of Students Have Completed the Program Thanks To Your Generous Investments.
July 18, 2016
Hi everyone!
I hope you are all having a great summer! I wanted to send you all a brief update of what has happened so far. Three students have already gone through the program and they graduated two Fridays ago. They received exposure to a lot of new technology and took part in a lot of challenges. They even got their hands wet in learning to create a website got to c - a very rudimentary one at that- to show off their final project on the last day of the program. I have included a link to below so you can take a look. In addition, they were ecstatic to receive their Chromebooks this past Friday. It was neat troubleshooting with their families and going into their homes to ensure that they had wifi and everything was set-up correctly. Thanks to your support we have helped propel them into the 21st century. I have included a few pictures here. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out. THANK YOU!

Hi Everyone!
Thanks again for your investment in this cause. We have some really wonderful students that are really eager and excited to be Makers this summer. I wanted to let you all know that although I have selected students that I worked with this past year at my school, and the school is listed on the cause page, the school will not be receiving the funds nor are they involved in this endeavor whatsoever. Your investments will directly go to MiamMade which is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering the sustainable maker culture in the Great Miami area. The camp (WynwoodMaker Camp) is part of the umbrella organization ManoAmericas.org. If you want more information you can click on this link http://manoamericas.org/ If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me! Thank you!
Thank you!!

I spoke with two bridge engineers I know at HDR, and they said they would be happy to give your students a presentation. Let me know how it would be best for them to reach out to you.
