The Description
A proud MASE scholar showing off a shed she helped build last year!
With these funds the MASE class of 2017 will be able to sponsor Night at The MASE Museum. We are collecting money in order to provide the materials we need for this night to the students of MASE. By funding us you will provide students from 6th to 12th grade with an extraordinary learning experience. We will be able to introduce new things to these students with the help of funders.
Students will be showcasing all elements of learning through an exhibition at the school based on Oceanography. The funds go toward gathering materials for a variety of projects. We will build a bigger and better geodesic dome that can be an outdoor space annually for exhibits. To enhance outdoor learning and social engagement, we want to build a set of picnic tables.
Last year, we had a great variety of projects, from a cardboard geodesic planetarium to a 3D modelled University set on the moon. The freshman also built a outdoor shed with solar panels. We want students to see the product of bigger dreams and so these funds will allow them to focus on doing better work.
Where are the funds going?
The class of 2016 wants to build 6 picnic tables to provide a better area for outdoor socializing and classes. These tables look to be the best way to do so.
The new dome will require between $500 - $1,000 worth of pvc, hardware, and plastic depending on the level of complexity and the size.
Another group is building an electric go-kart and parts will be at least $500 for the frame, motors, batteries, etc. They will have a chance to learn basic steel fabrication as well as the processes by which electric motors work.
Every student works on a project for the Night at the MASE Museum and so to help them produce quality work, a budget of $3/student will allow for enough materials to create more. This amount is for the paint, glue, and other materials that the art and STEM teachers supply.
Below you can see students working on projects last year.
Back Up Plan
We will find away to see good projects done and Night at the MASE Museum will be a successful part of the learning process. If we don't make our goal, we will use the funds we have. Students may have to augment projects to meet funding and this is a part of the problem solving process we work to teach here at MASE.
Instead of 6 picnic tables, we may build 3. We may have to use cloth to cover the dome this year and find a better covering next.
Last year inside a completed dome!
This young man built a guitar for his senior project and played it during the exhibition.
About the Creator
I am now at Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering as a STEM and math teacher. STEM classes provide a great place for students to approach and solve problems that actually resonate with them. It also allows us to explore fields and skills they may never know about.
