About Dare to Dream
Dare to Dream (DTD) began in 1995 as a program to boost self-esteem and provide positive role models for children in elementary and middle schools. The program's foundation is Dr. Harris' credo - the ABCs, “I can Achieve, if I Believe and Conceive my dream.”
THF's Dare to Dream program serves nearly 300 students in the Houston by providing a free, interactive character education and college and career readiness curriculum to fourth through sixth graders. Through the use of positive role models, community involvement, and college and career exploration, students experience a year of interactive lessons that educate, inspire and motivate students to set goals and create a plan to achieve them.
The My Self lessons teach students about respect, responsibility and other important values. The second module, My Community, focuses on planning and executing community service projects. Finally, My World introduces students to various career fields and encourages field trips to college campuses.
Each year, DTD ends with a celebration field trip. The program consists of a motivational speech from Dr. Harris as well as school presentations and skits and superstar awards for outstanding students.
After their participation, teachers report that DTD students have an increased desire to stay in school and have set goals for personal achievement.
