The Description
With these funds I will...
I teach kindergarten in an inner city public school in Philadelphia. Bache-Martin Elementary School is a K-8 school in an urban community in Philadelphia that receives Title 1 funding, meaning that a high percentage of our students come from low-income families. The funding for Philadelphia public schools has been at crisis levels for years, and I want to do better by our students by exposing them to a reading series that offers curricula in reading designed to meet ambitious 21st century global standards. Drawing on learning gleaned from decades of research, curriculum development, and working shoulder-to-shoulder with students, teachers, and school leaders, this new reading series is rooted in the Project’s best practices and newest thinking. I am looking to purchase Lucy Calkins; Unit of Study for Teaching Reading Series for my classroom.
Children need regular and active interactions with print. Specific abilities required for reading and writing come from immediate experiences with oral and written language. Experiences in these early years begin to define the assumptions and expectations about becoming literate and give children the motivation to work toward learning to read and write. From these experiences children learn that reading is a valuable tool that will help them do many things in life.
Please consider donating to this cause so I can better support my students in reading this school year.
