The Description
With these funds I will...
Take the students in Instructional Resource Classes in Grades 2 - 5 to the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. Students have been researching reading, and writing about Martin Luther King, Jr. Going to the Civil Rights Museum will help the students get an understanding of the history regarding Civil Rights and how this has changed their lives today. The Civil Rights Museum offers 260 artifacts, more than 40 films, oral histories interactive media and external listening posts that guide visitors through five centuries of history. Instead of just reading about history they will be able to almost live history during this visit.
These students attend school 1 mile from where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. It is a big part of the history of America, Memphis, and each student's culture. This experience will give them much more knowledge than we can learn in our classroom walls. It will make history come alive for them.
Admission is $12 per student (15 students total) and there will be 3 chaperones which are $15 each.
Back Up Plan
If I do not meet my goal I will try to get another funding source for the remainder or use it to discount the tickets for the students. Perhaps only 2nd and 3rd grade students will be able to attend.
