The Description
About
We are starting up a school-based chess team this year which will meet each week for formal lessons and participate each month in citywide USCF-affiliated competitions. Chess offers a perfect opportunity for students to have fun while building important higher order thinking skills. Through participation on our team, students will learn interpersonal skills such as sportsmanship and patience while nurturing creativity, logic, and strategic thinking.
What I'm Raising Money For
We need the following materials to achieve a successful and enriching experience for our team members: 10 chess sets with flexible vinyl boards and storage bags, and four clocks to use in tournament play. Based upon our research and the advice we have received from instructors, we hope to purchase Wholesale Chess club sets with Archer bags, and durable but inexpensive digital clocks from the same supplier.
Why You Should Give
My school is a K-8 neighborhood school in Chicago. Over 90% of the student population qualifies for free lunch and breakfast, an indicator of the income-level within the neighborhood we serve. Our student population is among the most ethnically diverse in the city and more than 60% of our students speak a language other than English in their homes. The chess team has received support and encouragement from the school administration, but we need funding support in order to obtain the materials needed to compete.
Back Up Plan
If I do not meet my goal I will purchase as many of the needed supplies as possible.
