With these funds I will purchase Kindle Fires. I have found using educational apps to be extremely helpful when teaching phonics. Last year I was able to work individually with a student who was reading significantly below grade level for 15 minutes a day on a tablet that a colleague let me borrow. The tablet made learning fun and exciting for her. This student came in to first grade 2 reading levels behind (level B). Using the tablet alleviated her fear and lack of confidence. She was able to leave first grade on a level J (right on level). Her confidence and excitement toward reading increased tremendously. 

Back Up Plan

If we do not reach our goal I will purchase as many tablets that I can with the money raised. My students sit at tables this year, instead of desks. If I do not raise enough money for the tablets, I will put the money toward a class set of chair pockets that I need to purchase. These chair pockets help the students learn organizational skills at a young age.

I am entering my 2nd year as a first grade teacher in West Philadelphia. I graduated from Temple University in 2016, where I developed my love for teaching in an urban area. I try to provide as many resources in the classroom that I can, to alleviate financial pressure put on the parents. I also try to integrate technology in the classroom as much as possible. I believe it is extremely important to teach students of this generation how to utilize technology efficiently and safely.
