With these funds I will...purchase a classroom subscription to Scholastic Storyworks, a bi-monthly publication that includes exciting texts from all genres, from poetry to debates. Each issue of Storyworks features articles on relevant topics in science and social studies, and fiction and nonfiction literary texts that cover many different and interesting themes. All of the stories are aligned to the rigorous Common Core standards that we use in our 3rd grade classrooms at Whitney Elementary, so having access to Storyworks would give students an additional opportunity to read engaging, complex texts and practice important skills in the classroom. 

At Whitney, we are constantly trying to give our scholars more opportunities to "Read, Baby, Read!" Our students are always looking for new books to read and are so excited when they see that new books and magazines have been added to the classroom library. Storyworks would be a valuable resource as my students practice their independent reading skills, and would introduce them to many new, exciting stories and ideas in many subject areas. All students would be able to use a classroom copy of each Storyworks issue, and they will be able to look forward to receiving new reading materials every 2 months. With the subscription, our classroom will also get access to Storyworks online, which provides skill sheets and comprehension tasks for each issue, as well as videos and writing prompts to enhance student learning. With these additional supporting resources, my students would have multiple opportunities to engage independently with each issue.
