The Description
With these funds I will replenish my classroom library so my students can engage in at least 10-15 minutes of independent reading every day. With over 50 books in our classroom, students will be able to freely check out books and take them home. Many of my students have never owned a book before, so this experience will be huge for them. I envision students engaging in independent reading for 10-15 minutes per day at the end of class with their new books. They will also be engaging in literature circles discussing prominent themes within each of their IR novels. Through journaling in their interactive notebooks, students will write about the connections they've made with either a particular character or situation presented in the text. I envision students will become voracious readers, not only reading their books for class assignments, but also reading at home and elsewhere for pure enjoyment.
Reading books have become a pastime that we've taken for granted. It's time we return to the basics by setting aside 30 minutes per day to read...it honestly doesn't matter what it is, so long as we're reading. Donations to this project will improve my class by helping my students take the first step in returning to the basics: getting back to reading. By becoming better readers, they'll be better analyzers, writers, communicators and speakers. In short, they'll be ready for the real world.
Back Up Plan
If we don't reach our entire goal, we will scour the earth for books. I know that sounds like an ambitious goal, but my students are definitely worth it. We plan on hosting book drives at our schools and churches, asking parents and friends for book donations, and visiting book warehouses for overlooked novels. It's important that my students are exposed to a variety of genres and feel comfortable reading books of various lengths. If we do not reach our goal here, we may also use my personal school budget to purchase books. Although it may not be much, any money that can be put forth in buying books for my students will go a long way. After exhausting all of these options, we plan to ask private schools and book stores for advanced reader's copies and order from overstock.com. No stone will be unturned. We will look everywhere for books.

They Actually Like to Read Now...
February 8, 2015
Because of Pledgecents, my students crave our independent reading time. Fifteen minutes is simply not enough...and those students who used to did not want to read...actually like reading now. With Pledgecents funds, I was able to purchase books more related to my students' interests. Many of my students have latched on to The Bluford Series...a collection of stories I think is great for reluctant readers. I am excited for my students, and I can't wait till more of them come running up to me about the new books they've begun reading.
