The Description

With the funds raised through PledgeCents, I will purchase exercise equipment for my 1st grade students. My students have a very hard time sitting in chairs, on the carpet, and even standing for more than a few minutes and it's because they lack strength in their core muscles! Not only is core strength important to students' physical health, but it greatly impacts their mental and emotional health as well. I want to teach my kids lifelong healthy habits and help them build the strength they need to be successful in the classroom for many years to come. Many of my students have never learned the proper way to do a push up, sit up, jumping jack, or many other exercises and I want to change that. I have long been infusing yoga and cardio into my classroom routines, but I want to do more for these little learners. This equipment will help students develop the strength they need to sit still both on the carpet and in their chairs, but it will also increase their heart health and their focusing strength. There is so much research out there that tells us kids learn best when we mix learning with active play!

I plan to purchase 5 stability exercise balls like the ones here or here ($12-18 a piece), 2 holders for the stability balls ($25 each), 5 yoga mats ($15 each), and an assortment of playground equipment like basketballs, soccer balls, jump ropes, and kick balls ($75 worth of equipment).

My students deserve the best education possible and that includes having the best physical education as well. They deserve to have the opportunity to grow both their minds and bodies in my class!

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase a smaller amount of equipment, with my priority being the stability balls and holders to give students an alternative place to sit as well as strengthen their core muscles.

Some Problems, But Progress

June 13, 2016

This school year has come to an end and, unfortunately, my first grade babies didn't get to see new exercise equipment because of a problem with bureaucracy. However, I've been working hard to get the problem solved and I'm positive my new class in the fall will get to use all the awesome equipment you invested in previously!

All was not lost with those sweer babies, though! I still used yoga and structured breathing on a regular basis in my class. Just look at those beautiful Eagle poses and Downward Dogs!

Working with the PE teacher and administration, we also got a set of playground balls for each grade level to use during recess (paid for through the district). Lastly, the school started Workout Wednesdays during which the whole school participated in quick exercises once every hour. Those were a big hit and I'm hopeful the school will continue that practice next year!

Look forward to an update in August to see precisely how your investments will be used in my new classroom (back in Louisville!).
