The Description
"Build strong boys or repair broken men"-- Frederick Douglass
The scholars of KIPP Polaris Academy for Boys deserve the experience of reading "Wonder" as a whole class because they deserve the opportunity to read an engaging, relatable, and eloquent story about tolerance, acceptance, and friendship in middle school. KIPP Polaris is the only all-boys school in Houston, and the student population is 50% African American and 50% hispanic. Our boys deserve great stories that will challenge their minds and attitudes and strengthen their character.
With these funds I will purchase a class set of "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio (33 books) for my sixth grade ELA students and a Kindle version to display on the Promethean Board. Reading "Wonder" as a class novel will engage my reluctant readers, ELL students, and high needs students and will strengthen student analysis skills and reading comprehension. With this book scholars will be able to analyze theme, figurative language, plot, point of view, and character development. By purchasing the exclusive collector's edition I will be able to use the 40 pages of additional resources to create engaging lessons to develop students' self-efficacy and self-advocacy.
Help us use this opportunity to build strong boys!
Back Up Plan
If I do not meet my goal I will purchase as many copies of the book as I can for my classroom to use during literature circles.
