I believe that all children are able and willing to learn and succeed. Unfortunately our education system disfavors students who live in extreme poverty. Funding for our school district is very limited,and most supplies have to be bought by the teacher. Additionally, there is no guarantee that any supplies will be available for the classroom by the beginning of the school year. Southeast Halifax High School serves a student population that is 99% minority and 91% economically disadvantaged (http://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/north-carolina/districts/halifax-county-schools/southeast-halifax-high-14484).

I am starting my second year of teaching with Teach For America and I will be running both an Earth/Environmental Science classroom and an English I classroom. The money you invest in our classroom will serve the students of Southeast Halifax by providing us with (1) basic classroom supplies that will help facilitate learning and (2) culturally relevant texts that will improve student reading levels and heighten student interest in learning.
