Unit 7 Novels for my Students

The Description

With these funds I will...be able to purchase novels for my students for the last unit of the school year. My school does not have the funds to purchase our Unit 7 novels, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian", and I would like to avoid asking my students/parents to purchase the books. This novel will also be the first opportunity that my students have had to read a fictional novel that involves character of color.

This project will allow each student to have their own copy of the novel to read in and outside of the classroom while also allowing them to make personal annotations in the text. I would like to purchase 58 books. The cost of each book ranges from $2.15 - $7 (view here).

The purchase of this novel is essential to the next level of educational development through analysis, critical thinking, and the exploration of new topics in the context of a character of color. They will be able to read about and analyze the topics of alcohol, poverty, bullying, violence, tragic deaths, mental disabilities, etc. While the students learn and discuss these topics, they will also be able view the 65 comic illustrations that are included in the book and make connections to how arts contribute to the meaning of the text. This text will allow my students to widen their lens of knowledge and world view through the eyes of a minority character.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase...a class set of novels for my students instead of individual student copies.

Thank YOU from my kids and I

April 5, 2016

Thank you so much for your generous support via donations and facebook shares. My students began reading their new novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian yesterday. I wish that you all could sit in on the class and listen to their giggles and watch how engaged they are with their books. As they are reading, I watch them annotate and underline knowing that they can because they have their very OWN copy of the book; it's their book to keep even once our unit has ended and that's all thanks to YOU. Thank you again -- from the bottom of my heart. -- Mrs. Gresham and her 6th graders.

Our Goal has been Met!

March 29, 2016

Thank you SO much to each and every person who donated to our (my students and I) cause and to those who shared the link via social media sites. We were able to meet our goal so that each student can have a novel for their own use during the last of our lessons for the school year. Thank you again for your support!

Any additional funds will be used to purchase books for our classroom library.

love this book! Here is a link to a folder of stories that I am collecting. Trying my best to get more great stories with people of Color. Take whatever you think the kiddos will like.

Keep teaching! and give my best to Miss Wollensack.
