MLK Service Trip to San Antonio

The Description

As an educator, I feel that I am privileged because I have the ability to empower my students to see their own capabilities, talents and gifts. To honor MLK and his life of service, I will be taking a group of about 50 students to participate in community service with City Year San Antonio, a nonprofit focused on increasing the graduation rate of at-risk youth. I was fortunate to spend a year of my life dedicated to service as a Corps Member of City Year Baton Rouge. It was through this experience that I learned of my passion for service, youth, and education. Service is an important part of who I am, thus I would like to share this life changing experience with my students. The purpose of this service trip is to provide my students with the opportunity to give back to the community for a day while broadening their horizons through exposure to the needs and environment of another city. The money donated to this project will help fund the transportation cost of a school bus (the roundtrip commute from Houston to San Antonio and back will take a total of six hours). By helping to fund my students' transportation, you will be helping them to realize their own potential as global citizens. I appreciate your time and consideration in making an investment in the holistic development of my students.

Back Up Plan

If we do not reach our goal, we will still use the funds raised for transportation costs and we will find other means of fundraising.

Thank You!

Hi Everyone!

I just wanted to take the time to sincerely thank you for all of your help with making my San Antonio service trip a huge success!  My 50 wonderful students and I had a blast partnering with City Year San Antonio (a non-profit organziation aiming to empower the community by decreasing the drop-out rate).  I wanted to share with all of you how much my students truly enjoyed the experience; they even let me know that it was the best community service experience that they were a part of because they truly felt like they were making a difference.  We built and painted benches for the community's first ever soccer park, planted flowers in a community garden, and picked up trash.  My favorite part of this entire experience was the reflection and hearing what each of them had to say about the impact that they made that day.  My goal during this community service trip was for them to understand the meaning behind the words "I Am Because We Are".  Their powerful actions and words throughout this experience showed just much how they had emobied this collective spirt.  At the end, my students thanked me for planning the trip and making this experience possible, however all of you are truly the reason that this trip was possible.  I can't thank you enough for your donation; it means more than I can say.

With gratitude,

Vida
